Mike Bobo shares his biggest concern about Georgia’s offense
It is no secret that Georgia football’s offense has not been as good as everyone hoped heading into this season.
There are some obvoius things that stand out including Carson Beck having turnover problems and Georgia’s wide receivers having issues dropping the ball as well.
But there’s another part of the offense that has been struggling this year, and that has been the run game. Sure there are a lot of reasons why this might be the case, with injuries to the running back room and offensive line standing out, but the fact of the matter is that Georgia’s rushing attack has not been a strength this season.
In fact, Georgia ranks 15th out of the 16 SEC teams in rush yards per game with 129.2. That is not going to cut it in the College Football Playoff.
Offensive Coordinator Mike Bobo recently spoke with the media and addressed these concerns with Georgia’s run game heading into the Sugar Bowl matchup.
“Obviously, it is frustrating. We pride ourselves on being able to run the ball. I can sit here and give you a lot of reasons, but all they’d be is excuses,” Bobo shared via uga.rivals.com. “Point blank, you can sit here and say injuries, you can say this, you can say that. But the bottom line is that’s an excuse. We’ve got to be able to run the ball if we want to continue to win in these playoffs.”
Georgia’s rushing attack is going to be heavily featured during their entire College Football Playoff run now that Beck has been ruled out for the season. With Beck under center, Georgia relied heavily on their passing attack, but that likely will not be the same with Gunner Stockton taking over.
We got a glimpse of this in the second half of the SEC Championship game as Georgia ran the ball a lot more with their running backs and Stockton as well. It’s important to note that Stockton is still a capable thrower, and many people are severly underrating him as a thrower, but Stockton is at his best when he is active in the run game.
So the expectation is that Georgia will rely heavily on their run game against Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl, which is a little concerning considering how poor the run game has been this season.
But with an increase in focus and preparation in the run game over these last few weeks, Georgia likely will be ready to make these adjustments and dominate in the run game, because the talent and ability to do so is clearly there
