TERMS AGREED: Atalanta set price for Man United to complete the signing of Giorgio Scalvini after agreeing to join Man United in January transfer window

The defender, 20, already has seven caps for Italy after his rapid rise with the Serie A club.

The 6ft4in centre-back made his debut for the club at the age of just 17 and he’s been a regular ever since, making a further 73 appearances for the Italians.

Scalvini’s development hasn’t gone unnoticed within Italy, with Juventus and AC Milan said to be eyeing up moves for the defender.

But United are the latest club to stake an interest in Scalvini, after the club’s scouts sent back rave reports on the defender.

Raphael Varane is expected to leave the club at the end of the season, while there remains doubt over Harry Maguire’s future.

That’s led United to look for a younger centre-back and SportItalia say the Red Devils are ready to enter the race for Scalvini.

However, his signature will not come cheap, with Atalanta not interested in discussing a deal unless a ‘crazy’ fee of around £51m is offered.

Atalanta have set an asking price of £51.7million for Manchester United to sign Giorgio Scalvini.

Juventus and AC Milan would not entertain such bids, but United could be tempted given their dire need for reinforcements.

Any deal is likely to wait until the summer, unless United can offload the likes of Anthony Martial, Jadon Sancho and Varane this month
