Paul Scholes urges Man United to sign £40m upgrade on Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee this summer transfer

Although Manchester United has already made significant summertime expenditures on forwards, Red Devils legend Paul Scholes wants the team to make another purchase to relieve some of the strain on Rasmus Hojlund.

Paul Scholes, who has already signed Joshua Zirkzee, has pleaded with Manchester United to move for Ivan Toney of Brentford. In recent seasons, the Red Devils have been active in the striker transfer market.

After spending £72 million to buy Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta a year earlier, he had a strong first season.

Joshua Zirkzee of Bologna was signed by United this summer, strengthening their front line even more. However, Scholes continues to think that will not be sufficient for the upcoming campaign.

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, he said: “You have got to look at the forward players. Could Hojlund score 25 goals for us this season? I would be amazed, I’d be surprised.

“You look at someone like Ivan Toney if he could come to us. Could he score 25 goals? I think he could.

“I think he [Hojlund] is really good but he has been brought into this country at 19 [21] years of age and he has been asked to be the No.9 for Man United. It is an iconic role for players who are scoring 20, 25, 30 goals and winning league titles.

“He should be a second, third or fourth-choice striker at a big club. They have brought in [Joshua] Zirkzee and I will be honest, I have never seen him play. I think goals will be a problem. I look at Zirkzee and I don’t think he has been a great goalscorer wherever he has been.

“He has got almost 40 goals in something like 150 games [48 goals in 143 appearances] which, coming to the Premier League, is only going to get more difficult.”

Toney could potentially be on the move sooner rather than later. He has just one year remaining on his contract with Brentford.
