Man United confirm signing of Lille defender in stunning summer swoop in a five years deal

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Lille defender Leny Yoro in a spectacular swoop for one of the most highly-rated young players in Europe.

18-years old Lenny Yoro becomes Man United’s second signing of the summer transfer window after completing his medical in England on Wednesday.

Real Madrid expressed interest, but United turned it down in favor of a £52 million deal with add-ons from Lille. Yoro will agree to a five-year contract with a one-year option to extend it.

This summer, strengthening the defense has been a top focus for United, as evidenced by the rejection of two bids for Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite and the ongoing discussions about Matthijs de Ligt with Bayern Munich.

Yoro seemed to be United’s hardest target, with Real Madrid reportedly being his top choice for this summer’s destination.

The young defender’s contract in France was set to expire in just one year, as Real Madrid preferred to sign him for free the next summer.

However, Lille was keen to profit, thus United’s offer was approved by the club, convincing the superstar to make the Old Trafford move in the process.

After the move was confirmed on Thursday night, Yoro explained how United’s rich history developing and providing a platform to young talent played a key role in his decision.

‘Signing for a club with the stature and ambition of Man Utd so early in my career is an incredible honour.

‘Since my conversations with the club, they set our a clear plan for how I can develop in Manchester as part of this exciting project and showed a lot of care for me and my family.

‘I know about the history of young players at Manchester United and feel it can be the perfect place to reach my potential and achieve my ambitions, together with my new teammates I cannot wait to get started.’
