i love Man United but … – Good news for fans as Antoine Griezmann responds to Man United transfer speculation as he makes final decision

Antoine Griezmann has again been linked with a transfer to Manchester United

Antoine Griezmann has played down speculation linking with a sensational January transfer to Manchester United.

The experienced France international came close to a move to Old Trafford during Jose Mourinho’s reign, but left Atletico Madrid for Barcelona instead.

Griezmann endured a miserable couple of years at Camp Nou before returning to Atletico where he has relaunched his career and established himself as a key component of Diego Simeone’s new-look team.

United, meanwhile, are keen to strengthen their forward line in January with an experienced and versatile player, capable of easing the burden on Rasmus Hojlund.

The £72m summer signing from Atalanta has scored five goals in Europe already, but is still to break his duck in the Premier League where he has gone nine games without finding the back of the net.

United replaced Cristiano Ronaldo with Wout Weghosrt on loan last January and Ten Hag is likely to be working with a similarly limited budget when the window reopens, despite the impending arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the cash injection the new investor will provide.

Griezmann, however, appears to have little intention of leaving Atletico mid-season and remains committed to the Spanish club, at least until the summer, despite again being linked with a move to England.

He told Marca: ‘I’ve to earn myself to be a legend in this club. That’s my mission.

‘By 2024 I want to bring joy to the fans and some title for Atlético. It would be a dream.’

Ten Hag, meanwhile, played down the suggestion that he has fallen out with Griezmann’s former France teammate Raphael Varane, who has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich after losing his place in the United team to Harry Maguire.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s game against Everton, Ten Hag said: ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about. There is internal competition, when you have to decide on two players who are brilliant.

‘Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane, you have to make a decision.’
