Man Utd 3-0 Athletic Club: Player Ratings as Reds on Verge of Europa League Final as Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire and Casemiro shines in epic victory
Manchester United beat Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday.
Alejandro Garnacho had an early goal ruled out for offside but United did take the lead on the half hour mark as Casemiro headed home following some great work from Harry Maguire.
United were awarded a penalty for a foul on Rasmus Hojlund after the referee was advised to consult the pitchside monitor. Daniel Vivian was sent off for the foul before Bruno Fernandes calmly made it 2-0 from the spot.
The United captain doubled his account on the stroke of half time to make it 3-0.
Here are how the players rated at San Mames:
Andre Onana
Made a big save at 0-0 that proved to be pivotal after Athletic lost their heads. Has had a much-needed quiet few weeks. 7
Leny Yoro
Switched to left centre back and showed admirable composure as Athletic dominated the first 30 minutes. Coasted through the second half. 8
Harry Maguire
Solid in defence and creative in attack. His cross for Casemiro’s goal was one of the best pieces of wing play by a United player all season. 8
Victor Lindelof
Seemed set to have a long night against Nico Williams and rather fortuitously cleared off the line from Alex Berenguer at 0-0. That was vital. 6
Noussair Mazraoui
A quietly effective first half was almost capped by a first United goal for Mazraoui, who smacked the woodwork. 6
Casemiro
Was doing a two-man job in the first half an hour before he nodded in another big goal. Continues to be undroppable in the Europa League. 8
Manuel Ugarte
So sloppy when Athletic were on top yet rallied with two creditable assists for Casemiro and Fernandes. Made way just after the hour. 6
Patrick Dorgu
Not the most polished of performances again but the Dane offered natural width and his constant running aided United at both ends. 6
Alejandro Garnacho
Had an early goal disallowed for offside but was undeterred. He often had Athletic on the back foot and put in a solid shift. 7
Bruno Fernandes
Showed admirable composure to slot in his penalty after a long wait and then clipped in a second to kill the contest to hit the 20-goal mark. 8
Rasmus Hojlund
Blatantly tugged by Daniel Vivian for the game-changing moment. Vivian was sent off and United got a penalty. Hojlund grew in confidence. 7
Subs
Matthijs de Ligt
First game in a month. 6
Mason Mount
Came off the bench, ran around and got booked again. 5
Luke Shaw
Replaced Mazraoui to give the Moroccan a breather. 6
Amad
Returned from nearly three months out. 6
Kobbie Mainoo
Late cameo. 6
