Fans rejoice as Top candidate to take over as Saints head coach finally revealed says insider as Gayle Benson gives the greenlight
The New Orleans Saints are heading into the final week of the 2024 season and will then kick their search for a head coach into overdrive.
Dennis Allen was fired part way through the season and the keys to the team were handed over to Darren Rizzi, at least temporarily.
They now sit with a 5-11 record with a tough game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the horizon. It looks as though a rebuild is in order, but with Mickey Loomis still at general manager.
Early signs indicate that Loomis will mostly be looking at people with some familiarity with the team, which should be of no surprise to Saints fans. That doesn’t mean they won’t consider other candidates, though.
With just one game to go, here are the most likely candidates to become the head coach in New Orleans next year
Aaron Glenn, Detroit Lions defensive coordinator
Glenn is widely believed to be the Saints’ top coaching candidate. He was the defensive backs coach in New Orleans from 2016-2020. The former cornerback follow Dan Campbell to the Lions and has grown into a top coach candidate since. If Loomis is determined to stick with the Sean Payton coaching tree, he seems like the highest-upside choice.
Detroits’ defense is much improved this season, allowing just 19.9 points per game. He is obviously a large part of that. The 52-year-old is a talented football mind as well as a good leader and understands the franchise and city. Loomis could do much worse than Glenn
Mike McCarthy, Dallas Cowboys head coach
McCarthy isn’t officially on the market yet, but it would be surprising to see him back with the Cowboys next year.
The former Super Bowl winner has kept Dallas’ offense around the middle of the league despite being without Dak Prescott for much of the campaign. There is reason to believe that he would be able to turn the offensive side of the ball back around.
Neither Allen nor Rizzi were offensive-minded coaches, so this would be a turn back to that for the first time since Payton. He was also the Saints’ offensive coordinator back form 2000 to 2005.
Joe Brady, Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator
Fans of the LSU Tigers will still know this name for sure, but Brady is going to be a national name yet again after the elite season that the Bills have had.
There is obviously a lot of talent, namely an elite quarterback, to work with, but he has had more success than anyone else Buffalo has had calling plays in a while. Josh Allen is about to win the MVP despite possibly having the worst group of weapons that he has had in his career.
Brady, just 35, was an offensive assistant back in 2017 and 2018. He would be an interesting way to bring someone with experience with in New Orleans while also getting a major refresh.
With him being so young, a rebuild with low expectations in a place that he is beloved might be his best-case scenario
