Man Utd tipped to sign £106m Top striker following Erik ten Hag shock summer transfer decision on ex-Man Utd target “not happy” at Bayern Munich
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag had set his sights on signing England captain Harry Kane in the summer, but the Dutchman was forced to look elsewhere for a new No.9
Harry Kane was identified as Erik ten Hag’s top summer transfer market before the Manchester United chief discovered that a deal for the England captain was unrealistic.
Acquiring a new No.9 was a priority for the Dutchman ahead of the 2023/24 campaign and Kane, a proven Premier League commodity, was a natural option for United.
The player, meanwhile, was ready to move on from Tottenham in a bid to win major trophies.
But while Ten Hag was sold on the idea of bringing Kane to Old Trafford, the club hierarchy were forced to dash hopes of such a deal.
Mirror Football has previously outlined that United were told extracting Kane from Spurs would cost in the region of £100million plus a further £400,000-a-week in wages – figures far beyond United’s reach.
United moved on to a deal for Rasmus Hojlund, who has settled into his role as the club’s new leading man after a chequered start to life in England. That left Bayern Munich free to wrap up a club-record deal for Kane.

While joining the German giants was seen as almost a guarantee for Kane being able to fulfil his thirst for trophies, Bayern have endured a challenging season and will need to overturn a 1-0 deficit in their Round of 16-second leg against Lazio to advance in the Champions League.
Thomas Tuchel’s side also find themselves five points behind Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, meaning there is a very real possibility that Kane and co end the season without silverware.
Tuchel, who himself is under pressure, admitted this week that Kane is “not happy” with how things are going on the pitch after criticism was levelled at the England captain for his subdued performance in Europe.
Tuchel said: “Harry takes care of himself. He doesn’t need me. He’s not happy with the connection in games. Neither are we. I’ve rarely seen such a discrepancy between training and matches.
“The way he scores in training, the way he puts his chances away – it’s incredible. It’s world-class. But then we rarely find him in matches. He acts like a captain. Everything’s okay with him.”
While it seems unlikely right now that United would try to sign Kane again in the summer – even if he ends the season without a trophy – Ten Hag is expected to target another striker in the summer to ease the burden on Hojlund next year
