Sofyan Amrabat could help Manchester United finally sign Adrien Rabiot this summer with Juventus eyeing up the Fiorentina loanee as a potential replacement for the Premier League-linked Frenchman.

If his hopes of earning a permanent contract at Old Trafford looked slim already, then the sight of Sofyan Amrabat being caught on the ball in stoppage time as Erling Haaland fired a third of the afternoon past Andre Onana at the Etihad Stadium probably served to book the Moroccan’s flight back to Florence.

Manchester United have the option to sign Amrabat permanently for around £21 million but appear destined not to take up such an opportunity; a man who thrived in Morocco’s low block at the Qatar World Cup treading water in the wide open spaces of Erik ten Hag’s box-to-box basketball.

HITC Football understands that Adrien Rabiot is still a target for the Red Devils. Amrabat’s greatest contribution to the Old Trafford outfit, then, could be to pave the way for Rabiot’s long-awaited arrival, the Frenchman’s Juventus contract expiring and the Bianconeri scouring the market for potential successors.

Ten Hag’s side expressed their interest again 12 months later, turning to Amrabat after Rabiot signed a one-year contract extension at the Allianz Stadium.
