Ruben Amorim sent transfer warning as Man Utd confirm Matheus Cunha signing

Manchester United have confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers to sign Matheus Cunha, but a former Red Devils star has a doubt over the signing.

In a low-key announcement, the Red Devils posted on social media: ‘Our first signing of the summer has been agreed.’

A statement on the club’s website noted that the signing is ‘subject to visa and registration’ but added: ‘Everyone at Manchester United looks forward to welcoming Matheus to Old Trafford.’

The announcement is no surprise as it has already been reported that Cunha has agreed a five-year deal to swap Molineux for Old Trafford.

The Brazilian forward had a release clause in his contract with Wolves worth £62.5m which United have triggered

There was a stumbling block as the Red Devils looked to come up with a payment plan which was initially rejected by Wolves, but an agreement has been reached.

However, former Manchester United midfielder Gordon Strachan has his doubts over where Cunha will fit into Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-4 system and feels another signing will need to be made to make sure it works.

‘He’s a great player and very talented,’ Strachan told Esports Insider of Cunha. ‘But with his 3-4-3 formation, where will Ruben Amorim play him? That’s the thing, Amorim’s formation is a problem.

‘Will United play him where he plays now for Wolves? Will they stick him in midfield? Where does he fit into Amorim’s formation? Will he be the one up top? I don’t think so.

‘Man United will need the right player to play up front with Cunha for his signing to work, that’s for sure. He’s a player, an absolute player, but Man United will need to bring someone else in to complement him for the signing to be a success.’
