Man United ‘leading the race’ for impressive signing – ‘Negotiations ongoing’ with player’s entourage

Manchester United are among the clubs keeping tabs on Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt, according to Calciomercato.

The centre-back has been restricted to eight league starts this season due to form and fitness, and was left on the bench in his side’s defeat to Bayer Leverkusen last weekend.

It’s claimed both Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain in particular are following the 24-year-old’s situation with ‘great attention’.

Erik ten Hag has already managed the defender when the pair were at Ajax and the latter could replace Raphaël Varane at Old Trafford. PSG, on the other hand, are looking at the Netherlands international due to Presnel Kimpembe’s physical problems.

The uncertainty around De Ligt’s future has seen the Bundesliga winners keep an eye on other defenders, including AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori.
Over at Tutto Juve, they state Manchester United and Arsenal want to secure the Bayern player’s services.

Even though the Gunners are interested, it’s claimed the Red Devils are ‘leading the race’ to sign De Ligt, who’s valued at €50m.

The report also adds ‘negotiations are ongoing’ between Ten Hag’s side and his representatives.

Elsewhere, Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund is aware De Ligt isn’t pleased with his current situation.

“Of course, it was a disappointment for him, but we are happy to have him with us. We have a lot of competition. Matthijs knows that, he handles it professionally, is a top professional,” he said, relayed by Kicker journalist Georg Holzner.
