Man United could replace Raphael Varane in £55m double centre-back deal

Manchester United are being linked with three potential new centre-backs as a potential replacement for Raphael Varane.

It was confirmed on Tuesday that Varane would be leaving United this summer when his contract expires. The defender first moved to Old Trafford in 2021 but has struggled with injuries across his three seasons with the Reds.

The France international has made 30 appearances for United this season but has missed 11 matches due to injury this term.

Now the Reds will be busy preparing for a new era at Old Trafford led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos Group after taking control of footballing operations.

Centre-back is an area of the squad that United have been linked with strengthening even before Varane’s exit was confirmed.

Now that the World Cup winner is set to depart, the need for defensive reinforcements has only increased – as have the transfer rumours.

According to the Daily Mail, United are set to make an offer to sign Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton. It has been claimed that the Toffees are determined to keep the centre-back at Goodison Park, but United are ready to test their resolve with an offer worth £55 million.

MEN Sport understands that United are monitoring Branthwaite with a view to making a move when the transfer window reopens. The defender’s teammate, Amadou Onana, is also understood to be under consideration among the Old Trafford hierarchy.
