‘i would like to play for Man United’ – Frenkie de Jong makes dramatic transfer U-turn after speaking out about Man Utd move
Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong has admitted he could be forced to reconsider his future at Barcelona two years after revealing his failed move to Manchester United
Despite admitting two years ago that Barcelona had tried to sell him to Manchester United, Frenkie de Jong has been candid about the circumstances that would force him to leave the Spanish team.
For a hefty £62 million, the Netherlands star moved from Ajax to the Blaugrana in 2019, but his performances haven’t yet reached the heights of his time in Amsterdam.
Even though he has been a consistent starter for Barcelona since his debut, the meager amount of medals he has collected—just one La Liga title, a Copa Del Rey, and a Spanish Super Cup—is making him rethink a lifetime commitment to the financially challenged Catalans.
After more than five years at the club, this revelation hasn’t
Ten Hag, having managed De Jong at Ajax, was adamant about reuniting with his former star, with Barcelona seemingly eager to make a profitable sale, as per De Jong’s own account.
In a candid chat with NOS back in 2022, De Jong explained the failed transfer to Old Trafford: “Manchester United already spoke with Barcelona [last summer] despite the fact that I wanted to stay here.
The club was in a difficult situation. They were able to sell me for a big fee, and they wanted to do this, but I did not want to leave so I stayed.
“If everything goes well for me and for the club, then I want to stay here for as long as possible. I have won the league here so now there is just one thing left for me to win this season, and that’s the Nations League [with the Netherlands].
“It’s not the Euros or a World Cup, but I think it would be a nice sign if we manage to win it,” reports the Express.
Now embarking on his sixth campaign with the Catalan giants, De Jong has only featured in the starting lineup for a single La Liga match following an injury that kept him sidelined for the first two months of the season.
While speaking with Voetbal International last week, De Jong conceded that he’s now contemplating moving on from the iconic club due to two principal factors. Admitting his priorities, he declared: “People think I want to stay at Barcelona forever because life outside of football is so good here, and that’s good, but what happens on the pitch is always more important.
“If I felt like I couldn’t contribute enough, or if the team wasn’t competitive, I would leave.”
Expressing his feelings about his achievements, the Dutch international shared: “When I signed for Barcelona, I didn’t imagine to win only a La Liga, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup after 4 years. I expected at least double, so that disappoints me. Things happen on the road you can’t predict.”
