David de Gea has returned to Manchester at the perfect time for those Manchester United supporters imploring the club to re-sign the free agent after his replacement’s woeful start to life at Old Trafford.

The Spain international, who remains a free agent following the end of his 12 seasons with United, was in attendance for Manchester United Women’s Champions League debut at Leigh Sports Village.

Marc Skinner’s side face French heavyweights and two-time European runners-up Paris Saint Germain in a heady European baptism.

De Gea’s re-appearance in Manchester has only reinvigorated calls for the club to re-sign the 33-year-old veteran following the woeful displays by his replacement Andre Onana.

Another Onana mistake very nearly cost United points at Brentford, only for the 27-year-old to be spared courtesy of Scott McTominay’s last-ditch heroics.

United legend Peter Schmeichel has stressed that Onana’s teammates are beginning to lose trust in him after the repeated blunders, though the former keeper also stressed the immense and unrivalled pressure that comes with playing for United.

Nevertheless, patience is beginning to wane for the former Ajax and Inter Milan shot-stopper. And De Gea’s return to Manchester is hardly opportune timing for Onana as pressure continues to mount against the replacement keeper and his ongoing teething problems.

De Gea took to his Instagram story to post an image of his feet crossed outside a tennis court, tagging his location as Manchester. Reports stated that the Spanish stopper had returned to the city as he prepares to clear out his house in Hale, which he lived in for 12 years.

And it appears that De Gea, who has been a long-time and vocal supporter of United’s women’s team and fellow goalkeeper Mary Earps, made time to see the team make history in a first-ever Champions League match upon his return to the city
