GOOD NEWS: Taysom Hill signs bizarre contract extension with Saints

Taysom Hill has agreed to a contract extension with the New Orleans Saints. According to ESPN, the Saints’ new deal with the quarterback is $40 million for the next four years.

However, the deal can rise to $95 million if Hill becomes the Saints’ starting quarterback over the next four years.

The deal includes $22.5 million in guarantees. Hill, 31, was close to becoming a free agent at the end of this season after signing a two-campaign $21 million extension with the Saints.

Because of salary cap issues, the Saints were able to keep Hill’s contract from being terminated the following spring.

Had that happened, they would have been hit with an $8.9 million charge in dead money fees at the expiration of his contract. Now they can spread those charges over future campaigns.

In some ways, the Saints (5-5) demonstrated Hill’s importance as part of their offense going forward, even after he lost the competition for the starting quarterback job to Jameis Winston in the summer.

Hill is guaranteed to be part of the Saints’ future. What remains to be seen is whether New Orleans considers him a candidate as a starting quarterback for the remainder of the season.

Hill has completed 7-of-8 passes for 56 yards with no touchdowns and one interception this season. He has run the ball 20 times for 104 yards and three touchdowns. And he has four catches for 52 yards
