BREAKING: Coach Mike McCarthy and the Dallas Cowboys part ways as insider reveals he is heading to saints in Bold Comments
Is there really a “bidding-war” market for free-agent-to-be coach Mike McCarthy? Or – given the concept that perception is reality – does it even matter?
Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy has stated his preference. In the coming days, he’d like to work with the Jones family in a way that gets the lame-duck boss a contract extension.
“Yeah, I hope so,” McCarthy said on Friday when asked about whether he might stay in Dallas. “I hope so, to be honest with you.”
Meanwhile, the work is being done in New Orleans to try to alter that view.
But that leads to another question: Are the Saints doing the work? Or is it just agent Don Yee who is doing the work?
While sources have made it clear to CowboysCountry.com that McCarthy has yet to meet with Jerry and Stephen Jones about his Cowboys future – that decision should be made one way or another in the coming days, with the coach’s contract set to expire on January 14 – Yee has been busy creating buzz about a McCarthy move to another NFL team.
So the national media is mentioning the openings with Chicago Bears and the New York Jets. But those concepts don’t quite have the same traction as what is happening in New Orleans, where the city’s biggest media outlet, the Times-Picayune, is making a bold prediction.
“Head coach Mike McCarthy and the Dallas Cowboys mutually agree to part ways,” writes long-time columnist Jeff Duncan, adding, “after courting Brian Flores, Aaron Glenn and Jon Gruden for their vacant head coaching position, the Saints announce the hiring of Mike McCarthy as the club’s 12th head coach. …”
The tone of this column is in part sort of playful. But our educated guess is that this info came from somewhere. And not necessarily from the Saints.
McCarthy, through the Cowboys, can field requests beginning Sunday night, with Dallas holding the ability to deny interviews – but only until January 14. If he doesn’t have a new deal here by then?
If the Saints call in the coming hours? Yee will have done his job, by creating some measure of leverage for his client. And the NOLA.com prediction will have some traction.
Meanwhile, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, sources close to him have told us, is considering whether he “can sell” the idea of bringing back McCarthy to Cowboys Nation. Jones will evaluate the weight of the locker-room support this coach has from Dak Prescott and the players. We say he’s got to be honest with himself about how the “Blow It Up” approach is the main reason Dallas flopped this year.
