Bayern Munich star Matthijs de Ligt gives exciting five-word Man Utd transfer update ahead of medical
Matthijs de Ligt is close to joining Manchester United from Bayern for £38.6 million, but he isn’t the only player traveling to the UK for medical treatment.
Prior to the duo’s double swap to Manchester United, Matthijs de Ligt has stated that he and teammate Noussair Mazraoui are going to the UK.
Both of the defenders, who were Ajax employees of United manager Erik ten Hag, had two bids totaling £51.5 million approved by Bayern.
The Red Devils have long coveted De Ligt, 25, and he will join them as their second center-back of the summer transfer window following the arrival of Lille last month of the now-injured Leny Yoro.
Meanwhile, 26-year-old Mazraoui is set to provide competition in the full-back areas, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka on his way to West Ham for £15m. Both Bayern stars jetted off to Manchester on Monday morning, with De Ligt following Mazraoui onto a private jet.
“Noussair is waiting for me,” the Netherlands international told local media at Munich airport.
De Ligt and Mazraoui will soon undergo medicals, with the Red Devils hoping that they’ll both be available for Friday’s Premier League opener at home to Fulham. Ten Hag was tight-lipped on the duo’s impending arrivals after United lost the Community Shield to Manchester City on Saturday.
“I can’t [give any updates],” the Dutchman said post-match. “When we have some news, we will announce it. Until that point, we will work with the squad that is available.”
Ten Hag did, however, explain why he’s keen to bolster his injury-hit defence. “It’s clear we have the problems,” he admitted. “We have to work, the players have to work to be available and the staff have to work. Together it should be a good collaboration with the players who are available.”
Earlier this summer, Ten Hag confirmed United’s interest in De Ligt, revealing to Dutch outlet AD Sportwereld: “I wanted to sign him two years ago but at that time he was already very far along to join Bayern Munich [from Juventus] but believe it or not, his name did not come from me in the process [at United].”
