Man United issue surprise Matheus Cunha injury update after Everton defeat

The latest Man Utd injury news after they lost to Everton in the Premier League on Monday night.

Ruben Amorim is still unsure whether Matheus Cunha will be fit enough to play for Manchester United when they face Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday lunchtime.

The 26-year-old missed the 1-0 home defeat to Everton on Monday night after he suffered a ‘minor injury’ in training over the weekend. Cunha was due to attend a local Christmas light switch-on event on Saturday evening, but had to pull out of the appearance as a precautionary measure.

Joshua Zirkzee was handed his first start of the season against Everton as United failed to break down a side that played much of the match with just 10 men. Benjamin Sesko is expected to be sidelined for several weeks after he suffered a knee injury in the 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur, while Cunha will hope to be back in the squad at Selhurst Park.

Manchester United will hope to have Matheus Cunha back when they travel to face Crystal Palace in the Premier League this weekend. The Brazilian has formed a key part of their attack this season and played a big role in their five-match unbeaten run going into the Everton defeat.

Speaking after the 1-0 loss, Ruben Amorim was asked for an update on the summer signing. “Let’s recover Cunha and we’ll see if he will be ready for the next game,” he told NBC Sports.

It was the second update Amorim provided on Cunha after he had confirmed his injury setback before the match started. Speaking in his pre-match media duties, the United head coach reiterated that it was not a ‘serious’ issue but he felt United could not have risked him.

“It was a knock in the training,” Amorim told Sky Sports. “I don’t know how long he is going to stay out. I think it’s nothing serious but we cannot risk players. We have to show everybody, when you are not 100 per cent, we have a different player to cope with the demands of the game.”

Amorim will provide another injury update when he holds his pre-match press conference later in the week. United were also without Harry Maguire and Benjamin Sesko for their 1-0 defeat to Everton, while Lisandro Martinez was named on the bench for the first time since his serious knee injury back in February.
