Bruno Fernandes breaks Europa League record after Man United goal vs Real Sociedad
Bruno Fernandes has set a new Europa League record as he netted Manchester United’s opening goal against Real Sociedad on Thursday evening.
Manchester United faced Real Sociedad in a crunch Europa League knockout fixture at Old Trafford, with Rúben Amorim welcoming the La Liga side to Manchester for the second leg.
With the tie delicately balanced at 1-1 on aggregate, the Old Trafford leg began with the visitors pressing forward, and their early aggression paid off when they were awarded a penalty. Mikel Oyarzabal made no mistake from the spot, putting his side ahead within ten minutes.
However, United responded swiftly. Just five minutes later, Rasmus Højlund was brought down in the opposition box, and Bruno Fernandes stepped up to convert the penalty, restoring parity.
With momentum on their side, United threatened repeatedly but were unable to find a breakthrough before the half-time whistle, leaving the teams level at the interval.
Early in the second half, the club captain was then able to score his second penalty of the evening, netting after a foul on Patrick Dorgu, resorting United’s lead as the second half continued.
Fernandes breaks Europa League record
Fernandes has been a leader both on and off the pitch for United during a turbulent time since Amorim joined the club and has been involved in six goals across United’s last eight fixtures.
He was once again on target for the club has he converted the penalty, which took him to 13 goals for the campaign, with his first coming at the beginning of November.
However, his penalty conversion has also broken a Europa League record – his nine in total in the competition is now more than any other player in the competition’s history.
Then, not long later, he was able to add this tenth penalty of the competition, further cementing his place at the top of the penalty table.
