Premier League release statement after controversial Liverpool vs Man United penalty decision

Following Liverpool’s penalty against Manchester United in the second half, the Premier League issued a statement. When Matthijs de Ligt handled the ball within the box, he was disciplined.

Referee Michael Oliver first waved away frantic cries from the Anfield crowd after Alexis Mac Allister’s header struck De Ligt’s arm in the 67th minute.

A statement from the Premier League on X, formerly known as Twitter, said: “#LIVMUN – 67’ VAR OVERTURN. VAR recommended an on-field review for a possible handball by de Ligt, deeming that his arm was raised in an unnatural position. Upon review, the referee overturned his original call of no penalty.”

Meanwhile, former United defender Gary Neville delivered his verdict on the decision to give Liverpool a penalty. He told Sky Sports: “I think his hand is high. I think he could be in trouble is my initial reaction. I saw it in real time when your hand is up there, we will see.

“He might get away with it with VAR not wanting to interfere. As soon as your arm is high like that in the box, you are asking for big trouble. Why is his hand there? I don’t know why his hand is there at all. That is the one where you don’t get away with it and he’s not going to get away with it.”
