Man Utd star returns to training in huge injury boost for Ruben Amorim ahead of first Premier League game
Just as a crucial player was about to return from injury, Ruben Amorim held his first training session at Manchester United on Monday.
Amorim’s arrival at Carrington last week was delayed by immigration complications, which prevented the former Sporting manager from starting work as United’s new head coach.
Preparing the Red Devils for their journey to Ipswich Town for Sunday’s Premier League match is his first task.
Injuries have kept several Portuguese players out of action, most notably Victor Lindelof, who hobbled off Saturday while playing for Sweden.
It’s not all bad news from the treatment room however, with the Manchester Evening News reporting that Kobbie Mainoo took part in Amorim’s maiden training session.
Ruled out since suffering a thigh injury at the start of October, then-interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy said just before the international break that the England midfielder was making ‘progress’ with his rehabilitation.
It remains to be seen if the 19-year-old, who became an integral player for United and the Three Lions last season, is fit enough to feature at Portman Road on the weekend
Amorim has also been boosted by the return of club captain Bruno Fernandes, who was allowed to leave Portugal’s squad a few days early.
The centre-back is already a regular starter for United’s U18s and despite his tender years, the 6ft 5in tall teenager already towers over his senior teammates.
Tipped for a bright future, Kukonki may well make his senior debut sooner rather than later if Amorim lines the Red Devils up in a back-three formation as expected.
