Manchester United’s players made their feelings clear as they watched Harry Maguire missed a late opportunity from close range with more than half the team sinking to their knees.

In the seventh and last minute of stoppage time, Joshua Zirkzee was let through and decided to square the ball to Maguire, turning the match into an end-to-end duel. The first time, the defender’s effort went over the bar.

They were left to observe as United’s five players were back on the halfway line. Some of them fell to the ground when Maguire’s shot missed the mark, while others stood with their heads in their hands.

As the referee blew the whistle to conclude the match, Andre Onana in goal ended up lying flat on his back, while Ruben Amorim, hoping for another spectacular victory, went to his knees in the technical area.

Captain Bruno Fernandes said: “I’m pretty upset. It frustrates me and finally I did a proper performance. We know how tough it is to play Liverpool, but we put in a real effort and played with some passion and heart. We can’t stop here. We have to bring this heart, passion and frustration to the next game.”
