Man United receive massive boost as Borussia Dortmund could be forced to sell €40m striker to Man Utd for bargain fee this summer amid strong Liverpool links

Borussia Dortmund are set to cash in on Donyell Malen this summer with the Manchester United and Liverpool target available for a bargain price, according to reports.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed a strong campaign for BVB, netting 10 times in the Bundesliga, while he was on target in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against old club PSV.

Dortmund’s form has tailed off a little recently and they have slipped to fourth in the table, now battling to secure a Champions League berth ahead of RB Leipzig as pressure mounts on manager Edin Terzic.

Malen has remained a consistent performer for the club – and often a solitary spark of invention up top – but SportBild are reporting that he may need to be sold this summer.

Dortmund have routinely cashed in on their best players but, for the first time in a while, they have no stand-out asset being chased by Europe’s big boys.

In the past, they have sold Ousmane Dembele, Jadon Sancho, Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland for huge fees, but this time around they will have to get a little more creative.

They are also facing a major exodus of players, with Marco Reus, Mats Hummels and Marius Wolf among a number of out-of-contract players, while loanees Sancho and Ian Maatsen are both expected to return to their parent clubs.

While Dortmund do still have some funds remaining from last summer’s Bellingham deal, they will need to cash in on Malen – and perhaps Sebastien Haller too – in order to bolster their kitty.

Although both forwards have performed well this season, BVB want to get back to securing top young talent who they can then sell for much larger fees in the future.

Manchester United have long-standing interest in Malen and were actually linked with a swap deal for the Dutchman that would also involve Sancho, though in the end the latter moved to Germany in a straight loan.

This time around, Dortmund will let Malen leave and will even settle for a transfer fee of just €40million (£34m).

Malen recently switched agents to Sports Entertainment Group (SEG), who facilitated Ramus Hojlund’s move to Old Trafford and also represent Erik ten Hag.

The United manager is believed to be a big fan of Malen and has been tracking him for some time, with the forward impressing at PSV during Ten Hag’s time as Ajax manager.

According to SportBild, Liverpool are also interested in Malen and want to bolster their own attacking options this summer.

Malen, who was previously on the books of Arsenal, is thought to be keen to make a move to the Premier League, though any potential United switch is likely to hinge on whether Ten Hag has the backing of Ineos or not
