“I will stay with the Seahawks on one condition” – Geno Smith’s future with the Seattle Seahawks rests in the present after shock admission
Geno Smith, the quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, has gone from expressing regret following a three-interception performance to leading the team to three straight victories and the top spot in the NFC West in 2024.
The Seahawks rejected Smith’s attempt to sign a new contract before the season because of his performances, which have generated both confidence and skepticism.
According to Brady Henderson of ESPN, Smith does not want to enter the final year of his current three-year, $75 million contract extension, which he signed in March 2023, without a new one.
“It’s still year by year,” Smith told reporters after signing the contract extension. “I’ve got to look at it like that.”
Smith, who replaced Russell Wilson in 2022, produced a breakout season in which he led the Seahawks a surprising playoff berth that year. Smith ended the season with career-highs in completions, yards, touchdowns, completion percentage and rating as a full-time starter.
He was named the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year and selected to the Pro Bowl. The Seahawks rewarded Smith with the contract extension
Smith’s numbers have decreased in each of the past two seasons and his 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 2024 doesn’t really enhance his case for a new deal that would place him among the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL, which would be around $50 million annually.
The other factor is Smith is 34 and it’s unlikely the Seahawks will want to commit a bunch of money on a long-term deal. On the other hand, Smith has guided the Seahawks to a position where they can win the division and earn an automatic playoff berth despite playing behind a shaky offensive line and a sputtering rushing attack.
