Garrett Wilson ‘expected to request trade’ from NY Jets this offseason (REPORT)

NY Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson is unhappy. The constant losing and years of offensive ineptitude have taken their toll on one of the Jets’ cornerstone players, and it’s possible we’ve reached the point of no return.

Wilson’s name has been the subject of trade rumors for months now, and a recent report from ESPN’s Rich Cimini has added further fuel to the growing fire.

On a recent episode of the Flight Deck podcast, Cimini reported that “people in Garrett Wilson’s circle” believe the star wide receiver will “ask for a trade after the season.” Cimini made sure to note that this is just speculation on their part, but those close to Wilson believe a trade request is inevitable at this stage.

This isn’t the first we’ve heard of a possible Wilson trade request this season. The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt reported earlier this month that many within the Jets organization are preparing for the possibility of a trade request in the offseason.

Wilson hasn’t been shy about his frustrations with the Jets over the last few years. The former Ohio State star reportedly expressed privately last year that “if things didn’t get better, he wouldn’t want to stick around long-term.”

Needless to say, things haven’t gotten better.

The Jets entered the 2024 season with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations, only to somehow find themselves in a worse position than last year. Aaron Rodgers and the Jets sit at 4-10 with three games to play, having been eliminated from playoff contention for the 14th consecutive season.

Wilson has still been able to put up impressive numbers in spite of the Jets’ incompetence. He ranks ninth among all players in catches, 12th in receiving yards, and fourth in targets behind only CeeDee Lamb, Malik Nabers, and Ja’Marr Chase.

The issue with Wilson doesn’t seem to be connected to his individual production. The man just wants to win football games — something the Jets have not done much of since he entered the NFL.

The Jets are 18-30 since drafting Wilson in 2022. They’ve lost at least 10 games every year he’s been with the team. That’s a culture shock for a player like Wilson, who came from a highly successful football program at Ohio State.

Of course, even if Wilson does request a trade, the Jets aren’t obligated to grant it. The team holds significant leverage, with Wilson under contract through 2025 and the option to use the franchise tag in 2026, 2027, and even 2028 if necessary.

There are numerous examples of players, especially wide receivers in recent years, requesting trades, only to eventually receive an extension from that same team. Arizona Cardinals safety Budda Baker is the most recent example.

Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean this would be a good situation for the organization. The Jets want to keep their star wide receiver happy, and the best way to do that would be to rack up wins. The only issue is it might already be too little, too late
