Ex-referee Dermot Gallagher sets record straight over Patrick Dorgu’s red card vs Ipswich as ‘fantastic’ point is raised
Dermot Gallagher, a former Premier League referee, expressed his opinion on the red card call against Patrick Dorgu during Wednesday’s 3-2 victory for Manchester United.
Andre Onana and Patrick Dorgu made a mistake at the back, and Jaden Philogene gave Ipswich Town a startling lead within the first five minutes.
However, after Sam Morsy put the ball in the back of the Ipswich Town net in the 22nd minute, Manchester United surged back into the Premier League match.
Matthijs de Ligt would then give Ruben Amorim’s team the lead at Old Trafford, but Patrick Dorgu was sent for a careless tackle in the 43rd minute.
Jaden Philogene found the back of the net in first-half injury time and Ipswich and United were level going into the break, with the Red Devils down to 10 men.
Gallagher’s verdict on Dorgu’s red card
Referee Darren England was summoned to the pitchside monitor after VAR called for a review of Patrick Dorgu’s challenge on Ipswich Town’s Omari Hutchinson.
Following the VAR review, Darren England brandished a red card and Manchester United star Dorgu was sent marching down the tunnel at Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim was forced to make an immediate change after United were reduced to 10 men and Alejandro Garnacho was sacrificed for Noussair Mazraoui.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, Dermot Gallagher admitted that it was “fantastic” for VAR to intervene and called for England to review the incident
The ex-Premier League referee backed the decision for Dorgu to receive a red card and said the United defender “really mistimed” his challenge on Omari Hutchinson.
“It’s fantastic [intervention from VAR] because if you look at another angle, it’s a really bad challenge,” Gallagher explained.
“I’m not saying he means to do it, but it’s a really mistimed challenge. He’s caught him up the shin, he’s come from distance, he’s got speed, hitting with the studs.
