Bruno Fernandes has told Man United one player they need to sign this summer
The reds captain Bruno Fernandes has congratulated teammate Tom Heaton on being included in England’s plans for the European Championship in Germany this summer.
On Monday, it was announced by the Football Association [FA] that Heaton has teamed up with the squad for the duration of the tournament as a training goalkeeper.
The 38-year-old will provide support and guidance for Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale and former United goalkeeper Dean Henderson.
England manager Gareth Southgate named his 26-man squad for the tournament last week and cut James Trafford from his plans.
The Burnley shot-stopper was one of four goalkeepers originally named in the 33-man provisional squad.
Heaton, who remains in talks with United over a new contract, has earned three senior caps for England during his career, last featuring in a 3-2 defeat to France in June 2017.
He has been included in squads since, most recently making the bench on six occasions in 2019.
Although he won’t be featuring for the Three Lions this summer, Heaton will be hoping to make an impact in a coaching capacity. He will bring a wealth of experience to the table and support the three goalkeepers Southgate has selected.
Southgate said: “I am really pleased Tom has agreed to join us in Germany. Experience tells us that a tournament can put a lot of demand on our goalkeeping group led by Martyn Margetson.
“Tom will play an invaluable role on the training pitch supporting Jordan, Aaron and Dean. Off the field as someone we all know well, he will add to the positive environment we are always looking to create. We are grateful to Manchester United for their support in making this happen.”
Taking to Instagram, Heaton said: “Incredibly honoured to be asked by Gareth to join the squad. To get the call to go to a major tournament, to help in any way I can and pass on my experience is a proud moment. We have a great squad, I’m excited and can’t wait to join the group.”
Heaton’s post prompted a response from Fernandes, who commented: “Great leaders are always welcome in any place. Congratulations, big man.”
Fernandes’ appreciation of Heaton and his leadership skills highlights how big an influence the 38-year-old continues to have within the United dressing room.
Despite not making a single appearance in the most recent campaign, the veteran is still a valued member of the squad.
