BREAKING: Sportswriter Bill Barnwell Suggests Jets Should ‘Move On’ From $112.5 Million Star ahead of 2025

The 2024 NFL season hasn’t gone the way the New York Jets hoped. With a roster full of talent and a blockbuster midseason trade for star wide receiver Davante Adams, expectations were sky-high.

Add in the urgency of quarterback Aaron Rodgers turning 41, and it certainly felt like win-now mode for the Jets.

Instead, they are sitting at 4-10 and fired head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas along the way. Where do they go from here? ESPN’s Bill Barnwell believes the Jets need to make a bold move this offseason-move on from Rodgers.

“Move on from Aaron Rodgers,” Barnwell wrote. “This one’s easy. The Jets will have to designate Rodgers as a post-June 1 release, which would free up $9.5 million in cap savings in 2025, albeit at the expense of $35 million in dead money in 2026.

Rodgers was owed $37.5 million in cash, all of which is unguaranteed. The Jets could technically wait until the day before the regular season to make this move, given that his base salary is only $2.5 million and wouldn’t be difficult to carry throughout the spring and summer, but it’s time for the organization to be decisive.”

If he does, though, he’s made it clear he wants to do it in New York. “I don’t even know if I wanna play yet, but New York would be my first option,” Rodgers said. “I’ve really enjoyed my time in New York.

Obviously we haven’t had the success that we’ve all wanted to have, but I’ve made some great friendships on the team. I’ve enjoyed living in Jersey. I’ve enjoyed time in the city. I’ve enjoyed getting to know the fans.

And I came here to win here. So, I’m not jumping off ship.” Rodgers is in his 20th NFL season and second with the Jets. He signed a three-year, $112.5 million deal after spending 18 years with the Green Bay Packers.

Unfortunately, his first season in New York ended abruptly after just one drive, as he suffered a torn Achilles in the 2023 season opener.

In 2024, the four-time NFL MVP has recorded 3,255 yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions
