BREAKING: Aaron Rodgers out? Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Makes surprise Decision On Aaron Rodgers’ Future as shock replacement named
The team announced it had hired former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn as its new head coach, succeeding Robert Saleh, who was fired last year after a 2-3 start.
And with Glenn assembling his new coaching staff — which reportedly includes former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, former Arizona Cardinals head coach Todd Haley, ex-Chicago Bears offensive coordinator/interim head coach Thomas Brown, former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Mark Brunell, and longtime special teams coach Mike Westhoff — it seems his first order of business is deciding what to do with QB Aaron Rodgers.
Many believe that Rodgers will be playing elsewhere in 2025 after two tumultuous seasons in New York, but according to ESPN radio host Michael Kay, Glenn already knows what he wants to do with the polarizing passer.
“There is word out there — there’s been leaks I’ve heard — that whatever they pay Aaron Glenn, Aaron Glenn has made it known that he would like to keep Aaron Rodgers,” Kay said. “And I really do believe that’s the way to go. … If you don’t bring back Aaron Rodgers there is a big cap hit anyway, dead cap money. You bring him back, there is still a cap hit but you know what, at least you have a quarterback.”
Bringing Rodgers back isn’t the worst idea in the world.
He’s a much better option than both Tyrod Taylor, Adrian Martinez or rookie Jordan Travis, who’s coming off a major injury, and with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2025 draft, New York is likely too far back to land either of the class’ top QBs in Miami’s Cam Ward or Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders.
If the team cuts or trades him pre-June 1, it’ll eat a $49 million dead-cap hit according to Over the Cap. However, if it cuts or trades him post-June 1, it’ll only incur a $14 million dead-cap hit and actually save $9 million against the cap.
The problem with keeping Rodgers is there seems to be some friction between him and top receiver Garrett Wilson. In fact, it was reported if Rodgers returned Wilson would demand to be traded elsewhere.
Perhaps Glenn can be a peace-maker and repair that relationship if keeping Rodgers is the way he wants to go. If not, the Jets find themselves in a tough position financially with just $20.76 million in cap space next season and a roster that needs a lot of work
