Former Man United Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sends warning to Erik ten Hag as ex-star released
Manchester United, led by Erik ten Hag, has made headlines this week for all the wrong reasons.
They lost 3-0 to Liverpool at home to start the international break with back-to-back losses.
Manchester United has had a challenging week as Erik ten Hag and his team prepare for the international break after two straight losses.
Just one week after losing 2-1 to Brighton at the Amex, the Red Devils suffered yet another blow to their season as their fierce rivals Liverpool easily defeated them 3-0 at Old Trafford.
Erik Ten Hag will have a lot of issues to resolve before his players return in two weeks.
Mirror Football has rounded up some of the biggest and eye-catching news relating to Manchester United as the club go into the first international break on a major low point.
Solskjaer’s “ego” warning
Man United will have painful memories of their difficult time under previous boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was sacked by the club in 2021, but despite the Norwegian struggling to bring success to the club he has sent a warning to his permanent successor Ten Hag.
Ten Hag had fired back angrily to critics of the club after losing to Liverpool – both before and after the 3-0 defeat – reminding them that he had won two trophies since arriving in 2022 and that United were second to City when it came to silverware in that time.
But Solskjaer believes managers using trophies as a defence mechanism was an example of “ego”, adding that silverware can “mask” the struggles of a club.
He said: “It’s more of an ego thing for managers and clubs. ‘We’ve finally won something’. We need to see progress and if we progress well enough and we perform well enough, the trophies will end up at the club again.
“It’s not like a trophy will say that we’re back. No, it’s the gradual progression and the consistency of being in the top of the league, in and around there, and then add the odd trophies. Sometimes a cup competition can hide the fact that you’re still struggling a little bit.”
Ex-United star released
Former Man United left-back Alex Telles only left Old Trafford for Saudi Arabia last year – linking up with fellow Red Devil alumni Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr – but the Brazilian has had his contract terminated already.
Telles joined Al Nassr for around £4m last summer and offered him a deal worth around £7m-a-year, according to the Sun, with the player hoping to enjoy regular minutes in a less pressurised league after falling out of favour at United.
However, the 31-year-old has reportedly had his contract mutually terminatd by Al Nassr after boss Luis Castro felt he would not require his services for the season
