He will stay on one condition – The glazers make final decision on Erik ten Hag sacking after changing Man Utd plans
Questions have been raised over Erik ten Hag’s future in recent days after Manchester United suffered back-to-back home losses and Bournemouth and Bayern Munich
Joel Glazer will be the sole power-broker on whether Manchester United sack Erik ten Hag if they suffer their third consecutive defeat against Liverpool on Sunday.
The Dutchman has come under more pressure in recent days following their abrupt exit from the Champions League. United suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Bayern Munich on Tuesday to finish rock bottom their group on four points from their six matches.
This came after the Red Devils were thrashed 3-0 against Bournemouth at Old Trafford in the Premier League. United have now lost 12 matches out of their 24 games in all competitions this season.
And Ten Hag is expected to come further scrutiny if United are beaten by league leaders Liverpool, who have won their last three top-flight matches.
According to the Manchester Evening News, United football director John Murtough has no intention of dismissing Ten Hag and Patrick Stewart, who replaced Richard Arnold to become interim chief executive, doesn’t have enough power to make such decision.
However, MEN add that Glazer effectively has the final say behind Ten Hag’s future before Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s 25 per stake is ratified. Ratcliffe is hopeful of completing a £1.25billion deal in United before Christmas.
The agreement, which will need formal ratification, is set to see Ratcliffe assume control of the club’s football operations.
United’s recent record at Anfield is not pretty reading for Ten Hag. In fact, the Red Devils have not won any of their last eight trips to Liverpool, with last season’s 7-0 drubbing the most painful of those. Jurgen Klopp’s Reds ran riot back in March, thanks to a brace each from Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah, while Roberto Firmino also got in on the act as United were humiliated.
Meanwhile, earlier in the week, it was reported that United are unlikely to trigger the one-year extension in Anthony Martial’s contract.
This means Martial would leave the Red Devils as a free agent in the summer. He has scored just one goal in 12 appearances so far this season.
Even though the decision to allow Martial to leave will be welcomed by many in the United fanbase, Glazer is a fan of the France international.
In fact, it had been previously reported that Martial is Glazer’s favourite player and he intervened during Jose Mourinho’s time at the club to stop him from being let go.
Ten Hag defended Martial after United’s defeat against Bournemouth last weekend after he admitted the criticism from the club’s supporters was unfair.
He said:
“Two weeks ago against Everton he played a very good game so he has absolutely the competences & abilities to play, so I don’t think it is fair, after a performance like this, to go to one player. We as a group failed all together.”
