Antony played with Onana at Ajax and has commented on the Red Devils’ pursuit

Manchester United winger Antony has been asked about the club’s attempts to sign former teammate Andre Onana from Inter.

The Red Devils are on the hunt for a new goalkeeper after belatedly deciding not to tie David de Gea down to a new contract upon expiry at the end of June.

They have already seen two bids knocked back for Onana, who played a starring role in Inter’s run to the Champions League final last season.

Man Utd had hoped to reach an agreement with Inter prior to this week’s pre-season trip to Oslo but they have not yet come to terms over a deal and talks are ongoing.

The Cameroonian played under Erik ten Hag at Ajax, while he also starred alongside Antony for two seasons in Amsterdam.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, Antony was quizzed on his relationship with Onana.

“I know him very well, we played together at Ajax. He is a great goalkeeper and a nice person,” he said.

Antony was then directly asked if he would like Man Utd to bring in Onana this summer, though opted against providing an assertive answer.

“It’s not for me to say, because it’s the club’s decision and not mine,” the winger said.

“I can only say that he is definitely very strong. And that there is a very good relationship between us.”

Should Man Utd sign Onana, he will become the third different player brought to Old Trafford by Ten Hag having previously worked together at Ajax, with Antony and Lisandro Martinez also following the Dutchman to the Premier League.

Ten Hag has recruited a further three players who have a history of playing in the Dutch Eredivisie. Tyrell Malacia and Christian Eriksen were brought in during his first transfer window, while Mason Mount has been Man Utd’s only signing of this summer so far
