Jason Wilcox reveals four reasons why Manchester United signed Patrick Dorgu

As Manchester United confirms the Danish international’s contract with them through June 2030, Jason Wilcox outlines four reasons why the team signed Patrick Dorgu.

Patrick Dorgu, a left-back for Lecce, has officially joined Manchester United in a move costing £25 million plus an additional £4.2 million in add-ons.

In an effort to strengthen their defensive options, Rúben Amorim’s team welcomes the highly regarded Danish defender.

Dorgu joins United as they attempt to address their defensive issues, which have been a source of worry all season due to set-piece weaknesses and injuries to important full-backs.

Tyrell Malacia has just returned from a 17-month layoff after two knee surgeries, while Luke Shaw has struggled with recurrent injury setbacks since suffering a double leg fracture in 2015.

Diogo Dalot has deputised at left-back in their absence, though Amorim has made it clear that the Portuguese full-back is better suited to his natural right-sided role. Dorgu now arrives to add depth, competition, and much-needed stability on the left flank.

Wilcox explains Dorgu’s signing
Manchester United technical director Jason Wilcox spoke to club media about the signing of Dorgu, to which he explained there are four reasons why they chose to secure the 20-year-old in the winter transfer window.

“Patrick is a really exciting talent; his strong defensive and attacking attributes, adaptability and work-rate will make him a key part of Ruben Amorim’s squad,” Wilcox explained.

“Patrick has had a superb start to his career, and at the age of just 20, we know he will continue to develop under the guidance of our excellent coaching team.

“Patrick is the latest exciting young player that we have brought into the club. We believe that each of these talents has world-class potential and the ability to play a key role in achieving the success that everyone at Manchester United is striving for.”

What Dorgu said about Amorim
With the player having put pen to paper on his new contract, it’s expected that he will slot straight into United’s first-team and could be in line to start against Leicester City next week.

Dorgu explained to club media that he is particularly keen on working with Amorim, with the left wing-back position a perfect place for him to shine.

“I am incredibly proud to be able to call myself a Manchester United player; this is a very special day for my whole family,” Dorgu said.

“I cannot wait to work with Ruben Amorim; his vision for this team and the future of the club is incredibly exciting. There is a clear plan set out for my development, and I feel that Manchester United is the perfect place to fulfil my potential and complete my huge ambitions.”
