Scott McTominay had a Scotland wonder-strike ruled out following a controversial VAR review.

Scott McTominay was furious after his Scotland wonder-strike against Spain was controversially ruled out by VAR. The in-form Manchester United ace powerfully struck home a free-kick from a tight angle but the incredible goal was bizarrely chalked off.

McTominay has been in excellent form for club and country, saving United from another Old Trafford defeat last weekend. And the midfielder nearly helped Scotland past Spain once again after his heroics against the former World and European champions back in March.

The 26-year-old, not known for his set-piece ability, stood over a free-kick close to the byline in Seville. It appeared that he might attempt a cross for a team-mate to head home.

But instead, McTominay audaciously went for goal with a blockbuster strike. The ball struck the inside of the near post and crashed into the net.

McTominay and his colleagues jubilantly celebrated what would have been his eighth international goal. However, VAR controversially disallowed the remarkable strike. McTominay was spotted launching what appeared to be a bottle to the floor.

The only obvious conclusion was that the officials felt that a Scotland player was impeding Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon from an offside position. Simon was unable to get across goal to save the effort, having been expecting McTominay to deliver a cross into the penalty area
