Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag could snub Mason Greenwood even if the club sanctions his return this season due to a potentially golden opportunity in the transfer window.

Joao Felix reportedly may become a free agent in the near future, which could prompt United to reignite their interest.

In January, United were linked with a swoop for Felix as Ten Hag scoured the market for attacking reinforcements after Cristiano Ronaldo’s sudden exit.

Ten Hag allegedly joined Aston Villa and Newcastle United as the 23-year-old’s suitors after he asked agent Jorge Mendes to find an escape route out of Atletico Madrid.

The Red Devils ultimately signed Wout Weghorst on a short loan, while Felix made a temporary switch to Chelsea until the end of the season.

But his relationship with Atleti hasn’t improved after returning to the club this summer, continuing his struggles since a £113million move from Benfica in 2019.

And Spanish reports now claim Felix is considering extreme measures to permanently leave the Wanda Metropolitano.

According to LaSexta, the Portugal international and his camp are attempting to terminate his Atleti contract, which ties him down until 2027.

Felix is said to have returned to the Spanish capital with the intention of leaving, but that hasn’t yet come to fruition.

And tensions spiked while Felix was an unused substitute in Atleti’s season opener against Granada.

With Ten Hag hungry for another striker on top of £72m Rasmus Hojlund before the summer deadline, he could sense the chance to strike.
