Rúben Amorim’s thoughts on Angel Gomes as door opened for Manchester United return before deadline

Rúben Amorim’s thoughts on Angel Gomes have been explained as the midfielder has opened the door for a return to Manchester United this summer.

Manchester United will need to reinforce their midfield under Rúben Amorim in the summer transfer window, with multiple midfielders expected to leave United this summer

Christian Eriksen is out of contract in June and is not expected to extend his deal and so will depart once the season finishes, while United have been looking to offload Casemiro for almost a year and may finally see him leave the club in the 2025 window.

Meanwhile, United are already lacking in the creative department, with Bruno Fernandes and Amad the only obvious options for Amorim’s No. 10 positions, although Alejandro Garnacho has shown improvement on the left in the last few weeks.

Kobbie Mainoo has been trialled as an attacking midfielder and as a striker of late, but it remains to be seen if he will suit the position long-term.

What Amorim thinks about Gomes
Earlier this season, United were being linked to their former player and club Academy graduate Angel Gomes, who departed United in 2020 when his contract expired.

He joined Ligue 1 side Lille but went on loan to Boavista, and has since established himself as a fantastic creative player.

He made his England debut towards the back end of 2024, and many have touted him as a potentially fantastic option for Amorim’s attacking midfield positions.

According to reports in late November, Amorim himself values Gomes as a player who could be a useful asset to his current squad.

There have been rumours that the 40-year-old has already sanctioned the possible return of Gomes. However, it has been routinely explained that multiple Premier League sides have been keeping tabs on the 24-year-old, including Arsenal and Chelsea.

Gomes opens the door to United return
What makes Gomes an interesting prospect for United is that his contract with Lille is set to run out in the summer, and according to The Telegraph, he will become a free agent at the end of June.

With Gomes in the final few months of his deal in France, has a whole host of Premier League clubs, such as Tottenham and West Ham, waiting to speak with him, but the player has chosen to stay at Lille and assess his options in the summer.

United will be looking for good value-for-money players across 2025, and Gomes may represent just that, with the player’s decision no doubt opening the door for a potential return.

The player has continually refused to rule out a move back to Old Trafford in the future, with this transfer potentially one to watch for the summer window
