Manchester United have no intention of sacking Ruben Amorim this summer following the team’s failure to win the Europa League.

United had the chance to end a miserable season with a trophy on Wednesday night but Amorim’s side were beaten 1-0 by Tottenham in the Europa League final in Bilbao.

The defeat means United will be without European football next term for the first time since the 2014/15 campaign, while their worst-ever finish in the Premier League is already guaranteed ahead of their final game of the season at home to Aston Villa on Sunday.

In his post-match press conference following the loss to Spurs, Amorim offered to leave United ‘without compensation’ if the board decided to change manager

‘In this moment, I am not going to be here defending myself. I cannot do it, it is really hard for me,’ Amorim said

‘I have nothing to show to the fans to say I am going to improve

‘So in this moment it is a little bit of faith. Let’s see. I am always open, if the board and the fans feel I am not the right guy, I will go in the next day without any conversation about compensation

‘But I will not quit. I am really confident on my job. As you can see I will not change nothing in the way I do things.’

However, The Telegraph report that Amorim ‘retains the full backing’ from United’s hierarchy and they are not contemplating a managerial change.

The report adds that United’s board have already accepted that the team could suffer this season and are ready to back Amorim with new signings in the summer window, as well as listen to offers for almost every member of the squad

United captain Bruno Fernandes has also backed United to stick with Amorim, despite the team’s woeful run of results since the 40-year-old replaced Erik ten Hag in November.

‘It’s not my decision, I think Ruben Amorim is the right person,’ Fernandes said.

‘I know it’s difficult to understand, but I still believe he’s the right coach.

‘The club is in a situation where it’s easy to have a new coach because the results haven’t been there. But I think he is the right man.’
