Paul Scholes proven completely wrong as ‘unbelievable’ Man United player shines against Liverpool
In a thrilling match on Super Sunday, Manchester United battled hard for manager Ruben Amorim at Anfield and emerged with a 2-2 tie.
Mo Salah’s penalty gave Liverpool the appearance of winning all three points, but a sloppy finish from the highly effective Amad Diallo made sure United shared the victory.
For the United supporters in attendance, it was a significantly better performance that demonstrated that perhaps, just possibly, Ruben Amorim could get it right.
Argentinian defender Lisandro Martinez’s goal in front of the United away fans was undoubtedly one of the game’s highlights.
Martinez has been questionable all season with his form but stepped up for his first goal of the season and in the main, delivered a good performance on the left of the defence.
And in doing so, Martinez managed to prove former United midfielder Paul Scholes’ pre-match prediction wrong.

Lisandro Martinez proves Paul Scholes wrong as he shines against Liverpool
While the obvious highlight for Martinez in his performance at Anfield was his fine finish, his performance overall was one of a defender who wanted to compete and keep out the likes of Mo Salah and Cody Cakpo.
And in delivering such a performance, it silenced Paul Scholes, who had predicted a tough day at the office for Martinez against Salah.
“United will have to defend quite well – I’m pretty sure they’ll defend quite deep, but they’ll have to be really good to get a result against this very good Liverpool team,” Scholes said before the game.
“When you think about Lisandro Martinez against Mo Salah on the United left, for instance, I don’t see how he stops him.”
Luke Shaw called Lisandro Martinez unbelievable and he proved it v Liverpool
Man United paid big money to sign Martinez and at times, he’s looked a touch off being worth the expense.
However, Luke Shaw claimed previously that his teammate had been unbelievable and he showed it Anfield.
“(He has been) unbelievable, to be honest,” Shaw told reporters after United’s draw with Newcastle. “You can see everyone loves him. The fans love him.
“His left foot is unbelievable. I think it always helps when you play with a left-footer on the side because he naturally likes to come out to that side, and I think he has fitted in really well. Of course, he can keep getting better and better, but for me so far, he has been unbelievable this season.
“He needs to keep that up. His aggression, his passion, we need him in that backline. He brings that every game. I am really pleased to have him in the team.”
Clearly, then, Lisandro has given Ruben Amorim food for thought and going forward, the new United boss will want more of this from the left-footer.
