Man Utd 3-2 Burnley: Why Amad Diallo Won Penalty finally Revealed Despite Contact Starting Outside Box

An explanation has been given as to why Manchester United were awarded a stoppage-time penalty against Burnley that allowed them to pick up a crucial 3-2 win at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils were in desperate need of their first three points of the season following their midweek embarrassment at the hands of Grimsby, but Ruben Amorim’s side looked set to walk away with just a point after another disappointing afternoon.

However, after Amad Diallo’s claims for a penalty were initially waved away, a VAR review led to a change of the on-field decision, allowing Bruno Fernandes to score from the spot. An explanation behind the penalty has now been given.

VAR Explanation Given For Amad Foul

Minutes after the decision that changed the game the game, a post was put out onto X from the Premier League Match Centre account that explained that the penalty was given as a result of an extended pulling action that while began outside the penalty area, continued inside the box.

“After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of no penalty to Manchester United.

Referee announcement: ‘After review, Burnley eleven has a sustained pulling action on Manchester United sixteen, which results in a penalty kick. My final decision is yellow card and penalty.'”

Former Premier League referee Mike Dean slammed the decision, saying: “VAR just needs to stay out of it, it’s just a complete accident. When the referee goes to the screen he’s just got to think ‘if I was the VAR would I be sending the referee? I don’t think he would.”
