Since departing Bayern Munich at the conclusion of the previous campaign, Tuchel has not had a job.

While his Bayern team finished 18 points behind Bayer Leverkusen in the previous season, they did win the Bundesliga title in 2022–2023.

The German, who was employed by Chelsea in the Premier League in England in the past, has been planning his comeback to the dugout and has been strongly associated with the Three Lions position.

Now, talks between the two parties have progressed and “an agreement could be reached quickly,” according to German station Welt TV, suggesting that he may soon be returning to English football with the national team.

England are still looking to confirm their permanent replacement to Gareth Southgate who left after his side’s heartbreaking Euro 2024 final defeat in July.

Under-21 boss Lee Carsley has been placed in interim charge for England’s six games in the Nations League but his chances of landing the job on a full-time basis took a hit after a shock 2-1 defeat against Greece on Thursday.

The potential news could come as a blow to Manchester United who were considering the German as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag should they decide to sack the under-fire Dutchman.

Ten Hag’s future as United boss appears to be hanging in the balance with United sitting 14th in the Premier League and without a win in five.

The club’s senior hierarchy, including majority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, met in London on Tuesday but no clarity was offered on the Dutchman’s future following the meeting.

United openly courted replacements for Ten Hag before the end of last season and held talks with Tuchel who is said to still be open to taking the job now.

Should England hire Tuchel, he would be the third non-British coach of the men’s national team after Sven-Göran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

Former Republic of Ireland international Carsley had been seen as the favourite to take the role on a full-time basis after impressive performances last month but appeared to distance himself from the job after England’s defeat to Greece at Wembley.

‘I was quite surprised after the last camp in terms of “the job is mine” and “it’s mine to lose” and all the rest of it,’ he said.

‘My remit has been clear from the start. I’m doing three camps. There are three games left and then hopefully I’ll be going back to the Under-21s
