Man United “submit verbal offer” for sensational Napoli striker as European giants match bid
Manchester United reportedly made a verbal bid for Victor Osimhen this summer, but a European powerhouse has matched their guarantee.
Manchester United will prioritize attacking signings this summer to address their goal-scoring struggles under Rúben Amorim.
United’s lack of firepower has been a recurring theme this season, with the team failing to score more than once each game.
Their inconsistency at Old Trafford has exacerbated concerns.
Last month, the club loaned three first-team attackers, including Antony to Real Betis, Marcus Rashford to Aston Villa, and Ethan Wheatley to Walsall, for the rest of the season.
Despite these departures, United did not add any attacking reinforcements in January. Their only signings were defensive additions—left-back Patrick Dorgu from Lecce and centre-back Ayden Heaven from Arsenal—though Amorim has hinted that Dorgu could also be used in a more attacking role.
United’s verbal offer for Osimhen
According to Turkish football pundit Yağız Sabuncuoğlu, United have handed a verbal offer to Napoli for Victor Osimhen this summer, however face competition from Ligue 1 side Paris St. Germain.
The Nigerian international has a release clause of around £63 million in his current contract and is currently on loan at Galatasaray after falling out with Napoli’s board and is set for a move away from Naples in the summer.
“Victor Osimhen is about to sign a deal with a world-famous management company,” Sabuncuoğlu told Sports Digitale via habersarikirmizi. “In fact, a Real Madrid player is mediating these talks. What does this mean? The possibility of signing with Galatasaray in June has decreased a lot.
“PSG and Manchester United made verbal offers to the player regarding salary and contract period. Because both clubs agreed to give Napoli a release clause.
“It is very difficult for Galatasaray to compete with these two clubs. He is most likely leaving at the end of the season.”
Osimhen at the limit of United’s age bracket
According to reports earlier this week, United are hesitant to commit as much as £70 million to signing Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting CP this summer as the Swedish international is turning 27 in the summer.
However, Osimhen is only six months younger than Gyökeres and would cost a similar fee, with United no doubt having to pay the £63 million release clause should they want the player ahead of next season.
He is a proven goalscorer, which United are in desperate need of, but the club must be wary of signing too many young strikers with Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee both at the club already.
It may be wiser for United to secure a striker who is more developed and experienced, although with the finances at the club tight, they may have to look at a more budget option
