Man United player ratings vs Arsenal with a 9/10 in excellent FA Cup victory

Manchester United defeated Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in a penalty shootout to go to the FA Cup’s fourth round.

Alejandro Garnacho did a great job teeing up the United captain, and Bruno Fernandes put the visitors ahead.

Shortly after the hour, Diogo Dalot was sent for a second yellow card, and Arsenal capitalized to draw even through Gabriel Magalhaes a few minutes later.

With 20 minutes remaining, Arsenal was given a fairly cheap penalty, but Altay Bayindir made a fantastic save to save Martin Odegaard from scoring.

The game ended 1-1 and penalties were needed because neither team was able to produce a victory in the extra 30 minutes of play.

Bayindir saved from Kai Havertz to hand United the advantage. United scored all five penalties to win the game.

Here are how the players rated at the Emirates:

Altay Bayindir

Could not even keep the ball in play with some kicks but recovered to make a brilliant penalty save and did well to deny Declan Rice twice. Made the vital penalty save. 9

Matthijs de Ligt

Defended stoutly for an hour until Gabriel Magalhaes’ shot deflected off him and went in. One of his most authoritative performances in the air for United. Made a goal-saving clearance in extra time. 8

Harry Maguire

Very commanding amid Arsenal’s aerial deliveries and embarked on a charge into their half. Penalised for a foul on Kai Havertz that was never a penalty. 8

Lisandro Martinez

Harshly booked after a physical duel with the lightweight Gabriel Jesus in an otherwise measured performance from the Argentine. Put his body on the line. 8

Noussair Mazraoui

Conceded the first corner and then won the header from it during a diligent first half. Switched flanks with Diogo Dalot at half-time. 8

Manuel Ugarte

Amorim spent nearly a minute ordering players to switch the play and, typically, Ugarte eventually played the desired pass. Beefed up United, who showed plenty of fight. 7

Kobbie Mainoo

Had a shot that was easily saved by David Raya. Continued his promising alliance with Ugarte in midfield until he came off in the 81st minute. 6

Diogo Dalot

Not as careful, or adventurous, with the ball as he was at Anfield and booked for a desperate foul just outside the United area. Then daftly dived in on Mikel Merino and was sent off. 4

Bruno Fernandes

Inexplicably denied a free kick and reacted by throwing his boot to the ground twice, for which he was booked. Scored superbly. Won both tosses for the shootout and converted. 8

Alejandro Garnacho

His first start in eight matches and struggled to reinvent himself as one of two No.10s until he brilliantly set up Fernandes. Put in a shift. 7

Rasmus Hojlund

United’s weakest performer yet again. Very rarely retained the ball and was not the nuisance he was on his debut here last season. 4

Subs

Amad

Came on later than intended, having been ready just before Arsenal equalised. Created two chances for Joshua Zirkzee. 8

Joshua Zirkzee

Shot unconvincingly from Amad’s pull back and nearly scored from the second. Won it. 8

Toby Collyer

Sensibly sent on ahead of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen amid the need for energy. 7

Tyrell Malacia

Good tackle on Raheem Sterling shortly after coming on. 7

Leny Yoro

Replaced Maguire in extra time. Great bottle to score his penalty. 8

Manager

Only made two changes, with Amad’s enforced due to a minor injury. Delayed changes as United reshuffled after the red card. Made logical substitutions at logical times. 8
