Man United ‘make contact’ with Olympic gold medalist as transfer plan emerges

Despite the end of the transfer window, Manchester United is still monitoring potential targets.

Right-back Juanlu Sanchez of Sevilla, a Spanish Olympian, is attracting their attention. Manchester United has contacted Sevilla in an effort to learn more about Juanlu Sanchez, a promising defender.

Juanlu, 21, was a standout performer for Spain’s Olympic team throughout the summer, helping them win gold in Paris following a thrilling 5-3 triumph over host France in extra time.

The product of Sevilla’s academy, he can play central midfield or further ahead on the right, but he mostly played right back.

United followed his performances throughout the tournament and were left impressed, prompting one Old Trafford chief to contact Sevilla sporting director Victor Orta.

ABC Sevilla also report that while no offer was made, the Red Devils’ interest is concrete.

With sporting director Dan Ashworth now leading United’s recruitment drive under the new INEOS regime, their focus is on signing stars of the future and Juanlu could well fit the bill.

Out of contract in 2026, Sevilla could be forced to listen to offers for the versatile Spaniard if they’re unable to agree fresh terms before he enters the final 12 months of his deal next summer.

La Liga rivals Osasuna and Premier League side Brighton were linked with Juanlu last winter but no move materialised in the January transfer window.

It was reported that his release clause was set to become €25million (£21.1m) from January onwards.

The 21-year-old has featured in all four of Sevilla’s league games this season, even scoring in their opening 2-2 draw away to Las Palmas. Having gone into midfield that game, Sevilla boss Garcia Pimienta heaped praise on Juanlu.

“He has played as an inside midfielder [before], we were short on space in midfield due to Saul [Niguez]’s suspension and [Albert Sambi] Lokonga’s injury,” Pimienta explained post-match.

“I spoke to him, I knew he could do well in that position. Juanlu has an incredible present and a better future.”

Juanlu also scored the goal which sent Spain through to the Olympic gold medal match, as they beat Morocco 2-1 in the semi-final.
