Man United eye loan deal for £70m-rated Dutch player Erik ten Hag called ‘top and Excellent’ in the 2024 Euros
Xavi Simons has been linked with a move to Manchester United
Manchester United are weighing up a loan move for Paris Saint-Germain winger Xavi Simons.
The Netherlands international played on loan at RB Leipzig during the previous season.
He scored an incredible goal against England in the Euro 2024 semi-final. He was a standout player in the Bundesliga, making just 31 games while dishing up 13 assists and eight goals.
With that form and an outstanding Euros, interest in him has grown. Furthermore, The Mirror claims that United is considering a loan agreement for the 21-year-old.
The Red Devils are reportedly inquiring further about a potential transfer, and Leipzig and Bayern Munich are also pressing to finalize a deal. Simons’ PSG contract is set to expire in three years.
Predominately a No.10, Simons is capable of performing on either wing for club or country.
The interest from United in Simons could see them planning for life after Bruno Fernandes leaves Old Trafford, with the Portugal international linked with a move to Saudi Arabia in the summer transfer window.
Having started his career at Barcelona, Simons moved to PSG in July 2019. He made just seven first-team appearances for the Ligue 1 club before leaving to join PSV on a permanent deal in June 2022.
However, having scored 22 goals and grabbed 12 assists in 48 appearances for the Dutch side, PSG triggered a £5million buy-back clause in his contract and he returned to the Parc des Princes last summer. But Simons would almost immediately leave PSG, signing for Leipzig on a season-long loan deal.
When asked about his future last month, Simons said: “I was happy in Paris. Things have happened. Now, I was in Leipzig this year. We’ll see after the Euros.”
Simons could be the next Dutchman to move to United with Joshua Zirkzee closing in on a £35.8million switch to Manchester from Bologna.
The 23-year-old forward had a medical on Friday and is expected to sign a five-year deal. Meanwhile, Matthijs de Ligt has also been linked with the Red Devils.
United boss Erik ten Hag praised Simons after Netherlands suffered a 2-1 defeat against England on Wednesday. “I enjoyed Xavi Simons in that game (against England),” he said. “The drive he has, the passion with which he conquers balls and recognises situations are top.
“His enormous drive as well. That is almost un-Dutch. I think you can see that he was trained abroad. He almost has a southern European doggedness in his game.”
