How Man United could register Former Juventus star Midfielder on free transfer after thanks to Rasmus Hojlund -Report

If Manchester United sign Adrien Rabiot, he’ll be able to play immediately because of a strange loophole involving Rasmus Hojlund.

Free agents can still join Premier League clubs despite the transfer window in England closing, but that comes with some caveats.

Top-flight teams will soon submit their finalised squad lists, but should Man United then bring in Rabiot, he can get directly involved.

The France international is a free agent, meaning he can be picked up outside of the transfer window and has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for a while now.

Given Erik ten Hag lost Scott McTominay in the summer and Casemiro appears to be a fading force, a player with the quality and experience of Rabiot would be a good addition to his squad.

From the Frenchman’s point of view, he has set his sights on remaining in Europe’s top leagues and an extra benefit to Man United is that he wouldn’t have to wait until January to be registered.

Why could Man United register Rabiot after the squad deadline?
The deadline for Premier League teams to submit their 25-man squads for the first half of the season is on Saturday, September 14.

Free agents can be immediately registered at any time throughout the year providing there’s space or the player is under the age of 21.

Fortunately for Rabiot, while he doesn’t qualify for the latter, two of his potential future Man United teammates can help open up availability in the squad for his arrival.

There are a maximum of 17 spots for non-homegrown stars permitted in the Premier League’s 25-player squads.

Ten Hag currently has that exact amount, but crucially, footballers aged under 21 don’t have to be registered as part of the senior team.

The unique provision behind that ruling means Hojlund, who is already 21, qualifies and won’t take up an NHG place for another season, allowing Rabiot to be registered by Man United.
