From Spain – Man United want to re-sign former defender less than a year after letting him go

Spanish media claim that Manchester United is interested in re-signing Tottenham full-back Sergio Reguilon.

After Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia went down with injuries in September, United had no recognized left-back in the lineup. Reguilon came to the team on loan from Spurs.

The Spaniard spent the second half of the season at Brentford after having his loan period terminated in January.

The former Real Madrid prospect still has a year left on his Tottenham deal, but according to AS, he is expected to quit the team permanently this summer.

His preference is to remain in the Premier League, however, with the report stating both Man Utd and West Ham United are interested in signing the 27-year-old this summer.

West Ham’s new manager Julen Lopetegui has previously coached Regulion during the left-back’s loan spell at Sevilla during the 2019-20 season, establishing himself as a regular in the side that won the Europa League that season. Juventus are also thought to be interested in his services.

Reguilon made 12 appearances for United, seven of those starts, before his loan spell was terminated in January.

United’s medical staff were, at the time, under the impression both Shaw and Malacia would be fit for the second-half of the campaign, prompting the club’s decision to end the loan early.

Malacia did not feature once last season due to a knee injury suffered last year and was only spotted back in training at the end of the season.

Shaw, who missed three months of action while Reguilon was at the club, returned to action towards the end of the year but managed just five appearances in 2024 before being sidelined again with a hamstring injury.

Shaw has not played any football since February and has so far missed all of England’s matches at Euro 2023.

‘In December, I had the talks internally, with the medical and performance [staff],’ said Erik en Hag said in March.

‘They assured me they will both be fit in January and so you will have two left full-backs. Then you have a third one [Reguilon], so I would always have to disappoint one full-back.

‘We talk about one of my biggest frustrations, there. You can accept in a position that a player is not available, but when two players are not available over the course of the season, that is very frustrating, because that is also very difficult to catch up as a team.

‘We dealt with it in the best way, but of course it is a disadvantage. In our left full back position, we’ve had two injuries almost over the whole course of the season. I think Liverpool is a good example.

‘Last year they had at the same and they couldn’t deal with it as well.’
