Forget Viktor Gyokeres & Victor Osimhen – Wayne Rooney names 36-goal superstar who should join Man Utd this summer transfer
Manchester United are in the market for a new striker and Wayne Rooney has named the player who should join the club
When it comes to scoring goals, Wayne Rooney certainly knows just a thing or two about finding the back of the net.
The Manchester United legend is the club’s record goal-scorer with 253 goals in 559 appearances for the club. He is also the only Red Devils star to surpass the 250-goal mark.
For a time, he was also England’s record goal-scorer with 53 goals in 120 appearances for the Three Lions. However, he has since been overtaken by Harry Kane who has netted 71 goals for England.
Discussing Kane on the most recent episode of The Overlap Fan Debate with Jamie Carragher, Rooney hailed the qualities of Kane and believes he would have broken Alan Shearer’s Premier League goal record of 260 had he remained in the English top flight. Rooney said: “If Harry had stayed in the Premier League, he’d break Shearer’s record for sure.”
Wayne Rooney says Harry Kane should join Manchester United
The former Tottenham Hotspur player has 213 Premier League goals, the second most since the rebranding of the top flight. He left Spurs for Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023 and over the weekend won his first piece of silverware as Vincent Kompany’s side were confirmed as Bundesliga champions.
United had been linked with Kane before his move to Bayern but a deal was never in the offing as Spurs supremo Daniel Levy was not willing to sell his star asset to a direct rival. It was put to Rooney that Kane’s career might have looked different had he signed for United, to which Rooney retorted: “He still can, he still should.”
Expanding more on his admiration for Kane, Rooney said: “I love Harry. I think, as a goalscorer, he’s evolved his game over the last few years as well, which we’ve all seen, in dropping deep, he’s got a good range of passes, he can shoot from outside the box as well.”
Could Man United land Harry Kane this summer?
Liam Delap, Viktor Gyökeres and Victor Osimhen are three strikers who have been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer. Delap could be available for just £30m while the latter two would cost north of £60m. Signing targets like Gyökeres and Osimhen is likely only going to be possible for United if they can qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League.
Kane turns 32 this summer but does not look to be slowing down as he has scored 36 goals and provided 12 assists for Bayern this season. According to talkSPORT, he has a £67m release clause which is set to drop to £54m for English clubs in January. His release clause means he would cost roughly the same as Gyökeres and Osimhen. Alex Crook, talkSPORT’s transfer correspondent, believes Kane will remain with Bayern for one more season before seeking a return to the Premier League.
He said: “I think he’ll do one more year. I wrote about this in the notebook last week, he’ll do one more year, try and retain the title, try and have another crack at the Champions League. And then I think, probably, he’ll set his sights on a return to the Premier League and breaking Shearer’s goalscoring record.”
For United to have a chance at landing Kane, they would need to vastly improve their domestic form. Winning the Europa League could give their rebuild under Ruben Amorim a major boost and make them a more attractive destination heading forward. It would then see Rooney get his wish of Kane in a United shirt.
