Bruno Fernandes explains why Manchester United’s draw against Liverpool ‘upset’ him
Bruno Fernandes has questioned why Manchester United can’t perform like they did against Liverpool on a consistent basis.
After losing against Newcastle at Old Trafford, the worst was feared for United against Liverpool but Ruben Amorim’s side opened the scoring in the second half of the game.
United defended brilliantly in the first half and Lisandro Martinez made it 1-0 just minutes after half-time, lashing the ball into the the net with a powerful shot from inside the box.
It didn’t take Liverpool long to respond through Cody Gakpo, and Matthijs de Ligt conceded a penalty for a handball shortly after that, which Mohamed Salah converted.
Liverpool, who are top of the league, would have expected to claim the victory after taking the lead, but United refused to give up and made it 2-2 through Amad with 10 minutes to play.
Fernandes was given the man of the match award for his performance and he reflected on the team’s display when conducting a candid interview with Sky Sports.
“The league table doesn’t lie. We’ve lost too many points and even today, we can’t be happy with the draw because we need points more than they need points, to be honest,” said Fernandes.
“Obviously I think it’s a really good result and we could have won the game in the end but I think it’s a fair result. Both teams played really good and it was intense football.
“There were chances for both sides but we can’t be satisfied. And I’m pretty upset because if we showed this today against Liverpool, who are first in the league, at Anfield, so they are probably the outstanding team in the league this season, why can’t we do this every week?
“It starts with me first because I think I finally did a proper performance overall and I think we need to be aware – and we said it before the game – we need much more from ourselves to get something from this season. We need to put some pride out because this isn’t enough for us.”
Fernandes was asked if he had the answer to his own question about the team’s performance levels and responded: “No, it’s been here but it’s not coming through. Today it came and now we need to look forward. With it being 2-1 and scoring, it’s always good to get a point but we need more.
“We have an FA Cup game against Arsenal, which will be really tough again, but we want to be in that final again, so we need to get this standard in every game.
“I wasn’t worried about everyone putting in effort today because it’s Liverpool. Everybody will try to do their best, but I will probably be more worried about Southampton after this performance, thinking it’s already good enough because it’s not and it will be a really tough one again.”
