Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat is reportedly ‘close’ to joining Liverpool in a significant blow for Manchester United.

Amrabat has been the subject of interest from a number of Premier League sides this summer including Liverpool, Manchester United and West Ham.

Erik ten Hag’s side were thought to be frontrunners for the 26-year-old’s signature, with the Red Devils boss having worked with Amrabat previously at Utrecht.

However, Liverpool have since arrived on the scene and could hijack United’s move for the Morocco international.

Dutch news outlet AD reported the news, stating that “Liverpool are on track to finalise the deal in the coming days.”

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has also confirmed reports, but insisted no formal offer had been made by the Merseyside outfit.

“Liverpool are now informed on Sofyan Amrabat, as AD reported,” Romano tweeted. “No formal bid made yet — just contact to be informed on conditions of the deal.

“No decision made yet, Liverpool are still exploring market to pick new favourite DM [defensive midfielder].”

The news comes shortly after Liverpool had their pursuit of Moises Caicedo derailed by Chelsea, with the 21-year-old opting to join the Blues despite having a medical scheduled at Anfield.

To add insult to injury, Reds target Romeo Lavia looks set to follow Caicedo to Stamford Bridge, just days after Liverpool agreed a £60m fee with Southampton.
