Antony delivers surprise verdict on “incredible” Real Betis debut after Man United loanee named MOTM

Antony has delivered his verdict on his debut for Real Betis on Sunday evening after the Manchester United loanee was named the Man of the Match.

Manchester United confirmed the departure of Antony on loan to Real Betis last week as he was unlikely to get much game-time under Ruben Amorim.

The 24-year-old had a handful of appearances for the club since the Portuguese boss’ arrival but it was clear that he would not be used often enough.

Ahead of the summer window, United need the player to raise his value through a successful loan move and Betis have taken him in.

It has been a good start for the Brazilian, who was named Man of the Match on his debut against Athletic Club on Sunday evening.

After a full week of training with the Betis squad, Antony started for Manuel Pellegrini’s side on the right-wing and was immediately involved.

Betis opened the scoring against Athletic Club after 15 minutes as Antony received the ball and cut inside before releasing one of his trademark curling shots towards goal.

Unai Simon was only able to parry the shot into the path of Isco, who slotted in the opener with ease.

Antony came off after 72 minutes and was awarded with the Man of the Match after the game despite having to settle for a point after the game ended 2-2.

“Very happy and pleased with the first game. The fans were incredible. A little sad about the draw,” Antony told LALIGA TV after the game.

“I felt really good and excited. I was waiting all week for this match. It’s important to me that the team is doing well.

“The manager told me to stay calm. He’s a great coach. Concentration on set pieces is important. We have to improve this.”

He added a message to the Betis fans, saying: “Thank you very much for everything. I will give 100% and my life in every game.”

Antony succeeding on his loan spell is perfect for United, who saw his value hit rock bottom during his difficult spell at Old Trafford.
